Bernhard TME provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design services and construction administration for the renovation of the existing 96,500 square foot Golden Library. The project completely renovated the building, which was built in the 1960s, into an open, energy efficient space that is designed as both a library and student support space.
Renamed the Golden Student Success Center, the renovated facility houses library holdings and services, tutoring, advising, and computer labs. The building also includes a café, meeting space, art gallery, and student lounge areas. The university has a goal to achieve LEED certification on construction projects on campus and the design team incorporated many sustainable features. These features include a high performance building envelope, high efficiency lighting, and occupancy sensors with integrated day light harvesting controls.
The building’s mechanical system is served by the campus’s existing chilled water and heating water district energy systems. Because the Golden Library was originally designed with low ceiling heights and limited space, an active chilled beam system was included in the design to reduce ductwork and improve HVAC system efficiency. For electrical service, a new service entrance was added to connect the building to the campus’s 15kV distribution system. The facility opened in August 2018 and is expected to achieve LEED Gold certification.
