Annual Energy Savings

On September 28, 2023, Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana (CFNI), located approximately 30 miles outside of Chicago, began a transformative 30-year Energy-as-a-Service partnership with Bernhard. This collaboration stands as a remarkable example of how strategic energy management can yield substantial financial and sustainability benefits for nonprofit organizations.

One of the most significant advantages of this partnership is the guaranteed reduction in CFNI’s utility expenditure. Bernhard has committed to achieving a minimum 33.96% reduction, resulting in savings of $4.1 million in the first year alone and a projected total savings of $250.1 million over the partnership’s 30-year term.

In addition to the financial benefits, CFNI’s commitment to sustainability is evident with $50.2 million in upfront infrastructure upgrades. These upgrades are expected to reduce purchased electricity consumption by 47.0% and decrease carbon emissions by 27.6%, aligning with the foundation’s environmental goals.

While CFNI retains ownership of all assets involved, Bernhard has assumed responsibility for ensuring uninterrupted energy delivery 24/7/365. This risk transfer shields CFNI from any potential disruptions in energy supply, further enhancing its financial stability.
