The Comprehensive Cancer Center Expansion project included a steel-framed, vertical expansion over an existing operational Cancer Center, adding seven floors of inpatient care space, totaling approximately 285,000 square feet, and increasing the number of beds to 190. The project also added a full-service kitchen and pharmacy.
The mechanical systems for this project were extensive and complex. Bernhard Energy Solutions™ led the coordination of plumbing, HVAC ductwork, HVAC piping, medical gas piping, electrical, pneumatic tube and sprinkler piping with structural elements, wall construction and owner-furnished equipment supports using 3D modeling. Bernhard™ also fabricated and installed the steam, steam condensate, supply and return duct, exhaust and fume hood exhaust ductwork, heating hot water piping, chilled water piping, the domestic water system, waste/vent piping, storm water piping and the medical gas systems.
The HVAC scope included furnishing and installing 20 new exhaust fans, two heat exchangers, seven pumps, three condensate receivers, two 100,000 cfm air handling units, a 54,000 cfm air handling unit and 450 VAV boxes with hot water reheat, as well as the relocation of 15 existing exhaust fans. The plumbing scope included a domestic water ultraviolet filter skid and a booster pump that serves the entire expansion. Bernhard™ furnished and installed a total of 1,320 plumbing fixtures. The medical gas system serves floors five through nine, and includes a medical air compressor and a medical vacuum pump. The system also includes the ability to send monitoring data of the medical gas equipment back to the hospital building management system.
