Bernhard Energy Solutions™ provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection design services, as well as construction administration, for the design of a new dining facility at ASU West Campus.
The new 37,000-square-foot facility features a market-style dining experience, along with private dining areas, a café, full kitchen, two conference spaces, retail space and patio dining space.
Bernhard™ utilized a variety of energy-saving features to enhance the efficiency of the facility. The HVAC consists of four modular, roof-mounted air handling units that utilize campus chilled water for cooling and natural gas for heating. These units serve terminal boxes in the spaces below to allow for zoned temperature control. Each high-density zone is equipped with a carbon dioxide sensor to ensure proper ventilation.
Bernhard™ also utilized variable-volume exhaust fans in conjunction with the kitchen hood control system to maximize energy savings through demand-controlled ventilation.
All of the lighting in the building is controlled through a programmable panel and is separated into individually-zoned spaces to allow for optimal efficiency.
These features, utilized on a campus that uses nearly 70% solar generation for power, allowed the Verde Dining Pavilion to exceed the project goals and achieve LEED Gold Certification.
