Bernhard TME provided mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection design services, and construction administration for this project to modernize the Bevill Biomedical Research Building by repairing the buildings mechanical systems, replacing the building automation control systems, performing select architectural renovations, and updating select architectural finishes and furnishings throughout the building.
The renovations took place while the building remain occupied, so the project has been planned, designed and coordinated in numerous phases. The project included $5 million in infrastructure upgrades, and the savings associated with those upgrades allowed UAB to fund and additional $4 million in architectural upgrades to the facility. The overall payback for the project is less than 10 years due to the significant savings achieved through increased system efficiencies; more than $900,000 per year saved.
Bernhard TME teamed with Deb Sharpe; a laboratory specialist with extensive experience in managing compliance programs, operating high-containment facilities, and designing cost-effective laboratory spaces. This partnership allowed the team to develop individual risk assessments for laboratory spaces to effectively ventilate the spaces depending on their use, thereby allowing for the lowest ventilation rates possible under the current codes, guidelines, and best practices.
