The Louisiana State University Medical Center is a medical care and research facility which, along with the VA Hospital, is a major part of the burgeoning BioDistrict in downtown New Orleans. The project site covers 16 blocks of the city, and totals over 1.5 million square feet. Bernhard Energy Solutions™ provided mechanical construction services for this $1.1 billion project.
The University Medical Center campus houses a number of buildings. The Diagnostic and Treatment Building is six stories and covers 750,000 square feet. The Ambulatory Care Building contains six floors with a 258,000-square-foot area. Between this building and the diagnostic and treatment building, a total of 86 miles of pipe and 1.9 million pounds of sheet metal were installed.
The Utility Building houses all of the electrical switchgear, transformers and emergency generators for the campus. The main domestic water service enters the site here to a booster pump, which delivers water to the campus. Bernhard™ also provided services for the UMC Parking Structure which is an additional 535,000 square feet.
